Walking…more than just a functional outcome, can be an unsurpassed quality of life assessment tool. This course advances beyond the traditional study of characteristics found in the stance and swing phases of gait.  Using Integral Human Gait Theory™, we will explore a comprehensive map that far exceeds the current understanding in physical medicine, rehabilitation and sport training. At the heart of the human experience, the “how” of walking shapes physical comfort, security, emotional well-being and happiness.

Using the sensory learning platforms of the Feldenkrais Method®, Bones For Life® and Somatic Functional Mobilization™ we explore the functional relationship between peripheral and spinal joints and their unique movement patterns. We will study the interplay of pressure and alignment through ground reaction forces to answer these questions:  What impact does gait have on neck, shoulder and upper/lower back health? Why is gait so important in human health and relieving chronic pain patterns? Why walking is beneficial, only if it is balanced.  In what ways does gait resonate with the rhythms of the body?

Days are sequential but you can choose day one only or the entire workshop. CEUs provided according to days attended. Most details on the objectives/agenda for each day will be posted in the near future.

Fee: Day 1 $195-($175 early); Days 1 and 2-$285 ($260 early); Day 1, 2, and 3 $385-($360 early)

Registering on this page is for all 3 days. Additional links will be posted soon to allow for Day 1 or 1 and 2.

Learning Theme and Objectives for Each Day

Day 1 Ground Reaction Forces: The Relationship of Pressure and Alignment

Describe the development, phases and sequence of movements in the gait cycle.
Articulate how horizontal rotation of the pelvis frees the foot in the rear and organizes the forward leg in the single leg stance phase of gait.
Demonstrate how the Swing Leg can power the “Spring” of the Stance Leg.
Differentiate how the lumbar spine accepts a position of neutrality during both the swing and stance phase of gait.
Experience a personal appreciation of how a vibrant gait contributes to well-being.

Day 2  The Re-organizing Power of Counter-Rotation

Organize the head, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle in a rotation/counter rotation movement pattern.
Distinguish how rib mobility plays a key role during both the swing and stance phase of gait.
Perform one movement process to align either the hip, knee or ankle
Discover the value and role that rhythm plays in contributing to a smooth and efficient gait pattern.

Day 3  The Dynamic Interaction Between Posture and Gait

Discover the potency and power of the abdominal muscles’ capacity for uprightness.
Perform on movement process using the Gluteals and/or Hip Adductors to re-orientate midline trunk awareness.
Evaluate the kinetic chain for the most effective entry point of change to create enhanced freedom and ease of movement in walking.
Demonstrate skillfully and powerfully the ability to stand on one leg.
Demonstrate 3 ways to align the C7 vertebrae over the forward leg in the single leg stance phase of gait.
